Comelit achieves Secured by Design membership

Security specialist Comelit UK, which manufactures a range of state-of-the-art access control and intruder alarm systems to keep premises safe, has become a member of Secured by Design (SBD), the official police security initiative.

Known for its high specification solutions, Comelit UK, of Luton, Bedfordshire, has achieved the required standards in conjunction with Essex-based partners Premier SSL, another SBD member company, confirming its products meet a high standard of security.

Comelit has worked closely with SBD with systems being adapted to provide an extra level of security. This includes securing lift lobbies and compartmentalisation of floors by controlling the lifts for resident and visitor access.

The company’s product range includes advanced video door entry, CCTV, access control and intruder alarms, together with smart home automation systems and a dedicated fire division – all delivered in compliance with the latest standards and without compromising on aesthetics.

Two of Comelit’s Door Entry systems meet UK Police Preferred Specification – the 2-wire SimpleBus systems, and the full end to end IP solution, ViP. Both feature on SBD’s established website.

Francesca Boeris, Managing Director Comelit Group UK, said: “Security is becoming increasingly important in the design of new buildings. Right from the initial briefing phases, we are increasingly being called in to advise on the correct technology required to deliver on even the most demanding specification requirements, of today and the future.
Here is where becoming a member of SBD is critical in providing confidence that the build quality and performance of our products meet the exacting demands of the scheme. Becoming a member is a great step in formalising the relationship and we look forward to working with our partners, including Premier SSL, to fulfil our commitment to all our clients’ security needs,” she said.

Founded in 1956 Comelit Group SpA, based near Milan, Northern Italy, has branches in Europe, Middle East, Far East and the United States and exports to more than 70 countries. The company has won several design awards.

SBD is a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service throughout the UK to deliver a wide range of crime prevention initiatives to deter and reduce crime and reduce the demand on police forces. It plays a significant crime prevention role in the planning process to design out crime in a wide range of building sectors. It has achieved some significant success including one million homes built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.

SBD Development officer, Doug Skins, said: “SBD works closely with National and Local Government – and a wide range of other organisations – to promote the benefits of building in crime prevention measures to reduce crime and help keep people and local communities safe.
“There are around 200 Designing Out Crime Officers, who are police officers or members of police staff attached to police forces around the UK, who work with architects, developers and local authority planners to design out crime from concept and planning stages through to construction and completion in a wide range of building sectors, including residential, education, health, leisure, transportation, commercial, retail and industrial.
“By becoming an SBD member, Comelit UK has demonstrated its commitment to providing secure premises to its own customers and to the Police Service to ensure buildings have appropriate levels of high-tec security and are safe and secure for the people who use them.”

About SBD
SBD is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), a not-for-profit, police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives across the UK. PCPI Board Members include senior police officers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who control and direct the work PCPI carries out.
SBD has many partner organisations, ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and the Police Service through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies to ensure that their publicly available standards actually meet the needs of the police and public alike.
Products must be subject to rigorous testing and additionally be fully certificated by an independent, third-party certification body accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) before being allowed to carry the SBD logo – this is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.
